Opinion: New greenhouse gas plan will help clean air and protect businesses Editor’s note: This column is part of a pro-con exploring the new rules approved by the Air Quality Control Commission last Friday. You can read the opposing view here.Colorado recently took another strong step to reduce emissions and protect our environment. After more than a year and a half of hearing from experts and stakeholders of all backgrounds, the Air Quality Control Commission adopted a first-in-the-nation rule that will lead to 18 of the state’s highest-emitting manufacturing facilities collectively cutting GHG pollution 20% below 2015 levels by 2030.The Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Energy Management for Manufacturing Phase 2 rule, or GEMM 2, was born out of Colorado’s Greenhouse Gas Pollution Reduction Roadmap. The roadmap lays out a strategic plan to cut the state’s pollution in half by 2030, focusing on the five largest GHG emission sources: cars and trucks, electricity generation, oil and gas, buildings, and manufacturing and industry. This rulemaking and related...

Opinion: Colorado’s new air quality rules put profit over people

Opinion: Colorado’s new air quality rules put profit over people Editor’s note: This column is part of a pro-con exploring the new rules approved by the Air Quality Control Commission last Friday. Read the opposing view here.As a Colorado resident, I am proud that our state has strong laws for greenhouse gas emissions reductions and environmental justice, but these laws mean nothing when regulations are not strong enough to put them into action. The rules the Air Quality Control Commission passed on Friday in the Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Energy Management in Manufacturing Phase 2 rulemaking are an egregious example of this problem.Impacted communities have been waiting too long for real reductions of pollution and other cumulative impacts from industry. Climate change likewise needs immediate action. The Environmental Justice (EJ) Act of 2021 brings those issues together, but the rule passed by the Commission falls short of meeting its requirements. The rule passed by the Commission, far from achieving near-term reductions, delays reduc...

The nickel ore export ban, introduced three years ago, seems to have been a success, attracting significant foreign investment into the country and turning Indonesia into a global battery-making industrial hub. The number of city dwellers is growing at an impressive pace too, boosted by high fertility rates and ongoing urbanisation. The World Bank estimates 780,000 new household formations per year up to 2045, driving long-term robust demand for housing. At first glance, then, Indonesia’s property market is an ideal place to invest.According to Numbeo, a cost-of-living database, residential property prices are significantly lower than in other nations of compar...

California gas prices creep up again, but help may be on the way

California gas prices creep up again, but help may be on the way Gas prices in the Los Angeles area rose again overnight, but not nearly as much as they have in recent days, and state officials are taking action to provide some relief. The average price of a regular gallon of gas rose 3 cents Friday morning after a 13-cent increase the day before.AAA listed the average price as about $6.32, which is still up 28 cents from a week ago and 95 cents more than a month ago.Statewide, the average is about $6.08, more than $2 higher than the national average of $3.83.In response to the high prices, Gov. Gavin Newsom has authorized state officials to roll out winter-blend gasoline earlier than the normal date of Oct. 31. Why do Californians pay so much for gas? "Due to the composition of the gasoline, refiners can produce more of the winter-blend than the summer-blend," Newsom wrote in a letter to the leaders of the Chair California Air Resources Board and California Energy Commission."Allowing refiners to make an early transition to winter-blend gasoli...
