Justice Minister David Lametti set to reveal plans to reform bail system

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:24:44 GMT

OTTAWA — Justice Minister David Lametti is set to make an announcement this afternoon about how his government plans to reform Canada’s bail system, after months of calls for tougher laws from premiers, police and opposition. He is scheduled to hold a news conference with a number of cabinet colleagues, including Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino and Mental Health and Addictions Minister Carolyn Bennett.Proposed changes to the Criminal Code come amid pressure from the provinces and territories to reduce the number of repeat violent offenders who are granted bail. A number of high-profile cases have brought attention to the issue, including the recent stabbing deaths of a woman and her daughter in Edmonton, which police say were committed by a man who was on bail at the time. The federal Conservatives say that’s the result of what they call a “catch-and-release” system, and have been publicly calling for stronger laws. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms gu...

Spain seizes Brazilian fishing boat with cocaine haul on rough seas

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:24:44 GMT

Spanish authorities have seized a Brazilian-flagged fishing boat off the Canary Islands with 1.5 tonnes of cocaine in a hidden compartment in its machine room, police said on Friday (12 May) as they brought the boat to the port of Las Palmas.Authorities shared a video of the 25-metre (82.02 ft) Efesios 5-20 being approached on rough seas by a speedboat sent from the patrol ship Condor.Officers arrested the crew of six people - five Brazilians and a Venezuelan national. The boat's name - Ethesians 5:20 in English - is a reference to a prayer by Paul the Apostle praising and thanking God.Police said boats transporting drugs from Latin America often transfer their cargoes to other vessels in mid-Atlantic to more easily reach the European market. The Efesios 5-20 caught their attention because it was so close to the Spanish islands off the northwestern coast of Africa.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: Why is it considered rude to wash your hands at a kitchen sink? The dish soap is available, the water is available, so what’s the problem?GENTLE READER: It is? Other than when the cook doesn’t want you underfoot and you could perfectly well use the bathroom sink?Miss Manners suspects that there are people who like to think up strange rules for the purpose of catching other people violating them. And that there are others who will now think of some strange hygienic reason to justify this alleged rule.DEAR MISS MANNERS: With a certain group, I am only invited to events that require gifts. Rather than planning parties just for the fun of getting together with friends, many people only issue invitations to celebrate milestones in their own lives.Related ArticlesAdvice | Miss...
