These cities saw home prices triple. Then what happened?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:13:33 GMT

(NEXSTAR) – When the pandemic hit, the line on the graph of ever-increasing home prices suddenly shot up to an even steeper trajectory. By 2022, at least 13 major U.S. cities had seen home values go up by more than 200% – i.e. triple – since 2000. But the past year has been different. As the Fed has worked to tamper inflation, interest rates have gone up (and up and up), and the over-asking bidding wars may have reached a ceasefire. What happened in those cities that saw their home prices triple in just about 20 years? Real estate brokerage Clever checked back on the data in 2023 and found that home prices in most of the major cities have been staying flat. In one city, they're even going down. Where do El Niño and La Niña get their names?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:13:33 GMT

(NEXSTAR) – You may have heard La Niña is over, and El Niño is getting ready to move in. It's one thing to understand what that means for our weather, but what do the words "El Niño" and "La Niña" even mean?Anyone who's taken even a week of Spanish class knows the terms literally translate into "the boy" and "the girl." But it's not immediately obvious what that has to do with climate patterns. The phenomenon's original name, El Niño de Navidad, gives us a few more answers. It was coined by South American fisherman in the 1600s who noticed the unusually warm waters in the Pacific that define an El Niño season, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration explains. They named the warm waters after Jesus, literally the "little boy of Christmas," because El Niño typically peaks in December, around Christmastime.
