Miami, San Diego State complete improbable Final Four

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 22:45:07 GMT

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jordan Miller and Isaiah Wong rallied Miami from a 13-point second-half deficit, Norchad Omier made two big free throws and an even more important steal down the stretch, and the fifth-seeded Hurricanes stunned No. 2 seed Texas 88-81 on Sunday to reach the Final Four for the first time in school history.Miller finished with 27 points, going 7 of 7 from the field and 13 of 13 from the foul line, while Wong scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half to beat the Longhorns, who had been the top remaining seed in a topsy-turvy NCAA Tournament. After falling short in the Elite Eight a year ago, the fifth-seeded Hurricanes (29-7) won the Midwest Region and are headed to NRG Stadium in Houston for a date with No. 4 seed UConn on Saturday night. It’s the first time since seeding began in 1979 that no team seeded better than No. 4 made the Final Four, so perhaps it is fitting that Miami coach Jim Larrañaga is involved. He took George Mason there as an 11 seed in 2006....

New EU telecom rules will leave everyone worse off

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 22:45:07 GMT

Carl Gahnberg is the Director of Policy Development & Research at the Internet Society. The European Commission has launched a public consultation on new telecom rules that threaten to inflict serious damage on the technology we use to communicate, conduct business and engage with the wider world every day — the Internet. The announcement of “The future of the electronic communications sector and its infrastructure” was the expected next step in a debate on regulations, which would require online services to contribute to telecom operators’ investments in new infrastructure across the Continent. It’s a response to calls from large telecom operators that content providers — such as Meta, Netflix and Alphabet — make a “fair contribution” to infrastructure investments like 5G.The logic goes that since a large portion of traffic on the networks is “generated” by these big providers, they should also have to contribute to the infrastructure — however, this premise is fundamentally flaw...

Israel’s leaders must find compromise on legislation that is tearing country apart, White House says

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 22:45:07 GMT

The White House on Sunday urged “Israeli leaders to find a compromise as soon as possible,” as widespread unrest broke out in Israel after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired his defense minister for objecting to judicial reforms that Netanyahu is seeking to enact.“We are deeply concerned by today’s developments out of Israel, which further underscore the urgent need for compromise,” National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a statement. “As the President recently discussed with Prime Minister Netanyahu, democratic values have always been, and must remain, a hallmark of the U.S.-Israel relationship.”The turmoil started when Netanyahu, newly returned to office as the head of an unusually right-wing-powered coalition, announced a plan to overhaul the judiciary. Netanyahu’s package of judicial changes would essentially strip Israel’s top court of its independence and defang the nation’s courts by making it possible for the government to pass legislation that ca...

German Christian Democrats rewrite Merkel’s China playbook

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 22:45:07 GMT

BERLIN — Germany’s Christian Democrats, the country’s largest opposition group, are planning to shift away from the pragmatic stance toward China that characterized Angela Merkel’s 16 years as chancellor, claiming that maintaining peace through trade has failed. It’s a remarkable course change for the conservative party that pursued a strategy of rapprochement and economic interdependence toward China and Russia during Merkel’s decade and a half in power. The volte-face has been spurred by Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine and Beijing’s increasingly aggressive stance — both economically and politically — in the Asian region and beyond. According to a draft position paper seen by POLITICO, the conservatives say the idea of keeping peace through economic cooperation “has failed with regard to Russia, but increasingly also China.” The 22-page paper, which is to be adopted by the center-right Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU)...
